PROGRAM ELEMENTS
To meet the specific needs of each local chapter, we have designed our curriculum segments to be easily adaptable based on the discretion of the facilitators. We understand that certain topics may carry different meanings depending on local culture and context. Our curriculum allows facilitators the flexibility to add, delete, or personalize content to ensure relevance for their participants. We also strongly encourage volunteers to incorporate their own talents, skills, and life experiences into the process! Each month, community volunteers receive a meeting outline aligned with the monthly topic. This includes a step-by-step lesson plan with craft ideas, projects, discussions, and videos to help them lead their own meetings. For those new to teaching, we also provide easy-to-follow scripts to help guide them through the process!
1. Welcoming
A. Ecstatic Dance Party
We curate a playlist that aligns with each meeting's theme to energize the group. Facilitators are encouraged to create an ambience with music, art, and pizazz throughout the meeting, helping set an exciting and uplifting tone.
B. Arts & Crafts
Our creative activities encourage participants to reflect on their identities and emotions through art, as we provide craft ideas that promote self-expression.
2. Unity Circle
A. DreamKeepers Motto
(see “mission statement”)
B. Introductions and Ice-breaker Question
“How would YOU like to be identified today?”
“If you could solve any global issue, what would it be?”
C. Bullying & Experience
We go around the circle, sharing any instances of bullying or harassment we have witnessed. This is a vital part of each meeting, creating space for open conversations that foster intergenerational advice. For some participants, this may be one of the only opportunities to speak up about experiences they might otherwise feel too afraid to discuss with others.
3. Mindfulness
A. Indigenous Folklore
For thousands of years, Native American folklore has woven together nature, animals, and humanity to teach valuable lessons about growth, respect, and becoming better people as a whole.
B. Meditation and Mantra
A mantra is a word or phrase repeated during meditation or mindfulness practices to focus the mind and promote relaxation. We discover a new mantra for each monthly topic.
C. Yoga
We introduce a new beginner-level yoga pose or sequence each month. D. Ecstatic Dance Circle We finish the Unity circle with a one-song dance-off! ...why not?
4. Enlightenment
A. Individuality Presentation
Each meeting, one student participant gives a 5-10 minute presentation of their talents, ideas, discoveries, and accomplishments.
B. Words of Wisdom
This is how we spread a universal message of kindness across the world. Our shamanic leaders teach us about life as we know it. Our messages of goodwill bind all of humanity together in working towards a greater purpose for all.
C. Group Conversation
We provide thought-provoking questions to spark meaningful discussions about the monthly topic. These conversations help build connections and offer guidance, especially for students who might feel isolated or hesitant to talk to adults about personal issues.
5. Community Action
A. Brainstorming Question
Brainstorming encourages collaboration and helps participants work together on shared goals. These questions inspire reflection, collaboration, and the power of collective action to solve problems.
B. Project Delegation
Volunteers guide student participants through each step of organizing and implementing the project, providing them with hands-on experience in turning their ideas into reality.
C. Theatre Games
Performing arts play a key role in enhancing communication skills, particularly for young people. We furnish various games that aim to build confidence, foster creativity, promote emotional expression, and enhance empathy.
